Accelerometer- An instrument
that measures acceleration.
Accumulation rain gauge-
A class of rain gauges in which the precipitation is accumulated
over time.
Acoustic rain gauge-
An instrument designed to determine rainfall over lakes and
oceans.
Acoustic radar-
Use of sound waves with radar technology for remote probing of the lower atmosphere, up to heights of about 1500 m, for measuring wind speed and direction, humidity, temperature inversions, and turbulence
Acoustic thermometer-
A device to measure air temperature based on the principle that
the speed of sound varies as the square root of temperature.
Adjustable cistern barometer-
A mercury barometer that is read by first bringing the free
mercury surface in the cistern to a fixed level coincident with the zero of the
scale.
Advanced very high resolution
radiometer- (AVHRR) A sensor carried on board NOAA
satellites used in meteorology and oceanography for measurements of cloud cover
and sea surface temperature.
Aerometeorograph-
A self-recording instrument used on aircraft for the
simultaneous recording of atmospheric pressure , temperature, and
humidity.
Air sampler- A
device used on a moving platform such as an aircraft that, when quickly opened
and closed, captures a representative sample of the atmosphere.
Airborne expendable
bathythermograph- An expendable instrument
that is dropped from an aircraft and used to measure the profile of temperature
in the water column.
Airborne weather radar-
Radar equipment mounted on an aircraft for purposes of weather
avoidance or weather observation.
Albedometer-
An instrument used for the measurement of the reflecting power
(the albedo) of a surface.
All sky photometer-
A photometer with a field of view that is wide enough to measure
the amount of light energy emanating from the entire hemisphere or almost the
entire hemisphere of sky above the instrument.
Alti electrograph-
A balloon-borne instrument for recording the value of the
atmospheric electric field strength within active
thunderstorms.
Altimeter- An
instrument that determines the altitude of an object with respect to a fixed
level.
Amplitude modulated indicator-
One of two general classes of radar indicator in which the sweep
of the electron beam is deflected vertically or horizontally from a base line to
indicate the existence of an echo from a target.
Anemometer-
The general name for instruments designed to measure either
total wind speed or the speed of one or more linear components of the wind
vector.
Anemoscope- An
instrument for indicating the existence and direction of the
wind.
Aneroid barograph-
An aneroid barometer arranged so that the deflection of the
aneroid capsule actuates a pen that graphs a record on a rotating
drum.
Antenna- A
conductor or system of conductors for radiating and/or receiving radio
energy.
