Balloon sounding- Upper-air
measurement of temperature and humidity made with a radiosonde attached to a
free-flight sounding balloon.
Barograph- A
recording barometer.
Barometer- An
instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure.
Barometric altimeter-
An aneroid barometer calibrated to convert atmospheric pressure
into altitude.
Barothermograph-
An instrument that automatically records temperature and
pressure.
Barothermohygrograph-
An instrument that automatically records temperature, pressure,
and humidity.
Bathythermograph-
A device for obtaining, from a ship under way, a record of
temperature against depth (strictly speaking, pressure) in the upper 300 m of
the ocean.
Bimetallic thermometer-
A thermometer in which the sensitive element consists of a
compound strip of metal formed by welding together two strips of metal having
different coefficients of expansion.
Bistatic radar-
A radar system configuration with one or more receivers located at a site
different from the transmitter.
Bivane- A
sensitive wind vane used in turbulence studies to obtain a record of the
horizontal and vertical inclinations of the wind vector.
Black bulb thermometer-
A thermometer with a sensitive element made to approximate a
blackbody by covering it with lamp black.
Bolometer- An
instrument that measures the intensity of radiant energy by employing a
thermally sensitive electrical resistor; a type of
actinometer.
Bottle thermometer-
A thermoelectric thermometer used for measuring air
temperature.
Boundary layer radar-
A type of wind profiler specially designed to study the lower
part of the troposphere.
Bridled cup anemometer-
A combination cup anemometer and pressure-plate anemometer,
consisting of an array of cups about a vertical axis of rotation, the free
rotation of which is restricted by a suitable spring
arrangement.
Brontometer- A
general term to designate apparatus designed to observe the details of weather
during thunderstorms.
Bucket thermometer-
A water-temperature thermometer provided with an insulated
container around the bulb.
