NASA Scatterometer-
A specialized microwave radar designed to measure surface winds over the oceans from an orbiting satellite.
Narrow beam radiogoniometer-
(same as narrow-sector recorder) A radio direction-finder with which atmospherics are received from a limited sector related to the position of the antenna. The antenna is usually rotated continuously and the bearings of
the atmospherics recorded automatically.
Narrow-sector recorder-
(same as narrow-beam radiogoniometer) A radio direction-finder with which atmospherics are received from a limited sector related to the position of the antenna. The antenna is usually rotated
continuously and the bearings of the atmospherics recorded automatically.
NASA Scatterometer-
A specialized microwave radar designed to measure surface winds over the oceans from an orbiting satellite.
National standard barometer-
Barometer designated by a WMO member as the reference standard barometer for its own country.
Near-polar-orbiting satellite-
A satellite with an orbit that lies in a plane passing through the center of the earth and is inclined to the equatorial plane such that the subpoint
track traverses polar latitudes on every orbit.
Nephelometer-
General name for instruments that measure, at more than one angle, the scattering function of particles suspended in a medium.
Nepheloscope-
1. A laboratory instrument for the production of clouds by the condensation process. 2. An instrument for demonstrating the temperature changes that occur in air that is rapidly expanded
or compressed.
Nephometer-
A general term for instruments designed to measure the amount of cloudiness.
Nephoscope-
An instrument for determining the direction and relative speed of cloud motion.
Net pyranometer-
Net radiometer designed to measure only solar radiation wavelengths.
Net pyrgeometer-
Net radiometer designed to measure only thermal infrared wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation.
Net pyrradiometer-
Net radiometer designed to measure both solar and thermal wavelengths of radiation as a single sum of energy.
Net radiometer-
A radiometer designed to measure the difference in irradiance coming from two opposing hemispheric fields of view.
Next generation radar-
(NEXRAD) 1. Acronym for Next Generation Weather Radar program, a joint program of the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Transportation during the 1980s and 1990s to develop and deploy a network of operational Doppler weather radars. 2. The popular name for the radar itself, the WSR-88D weather radar, which became the operational network radar for the U.S. National Weather Service, U.S. Air Force, and Federal Aviation Administration during the early and middle 1990s. The nominal transmitted
wavelength of the WSR-88D is 10.5 cm (S band) and the nominal circular beamwidth is 0.95°.
Nine light indicator-
A remote indicator for wind speed and direction used in conjunction with a contact anemometer and a wind vane.
Nonrecording rain gauge-
Any member of the class of rain gauges in which rain amount as a function of time is not automatically recorded.
Normal barometer-
A barometer of such accuracy that it can be used for the determination of pressure standards.
Nucleus counter-
Any of several devices for determining the number of condensation nuclei or ice nuclei in a sample of air.
